"I had now made about 45 pictures, but what had I become? I knew all too well: a phallic symbol. All over the world I was, as a name and personality, equated with sex." - Erroll Flynn [ref.4]
Today in 1909 one of the most beautiful men to grace the movie screen was born, Errol Flynn. His good looks and debonair charms swept movie-goers off their feet, and into the screen romances he starred in.
He was born in Tasmania, Australia, which is probably what brought out the devil in him. He moved to Sydney [ref.1] and was kicked out of school a few times. His poor mother probably spent endless nights weeping over what ever was to become of him [ref. 2]. He started getting in trouble with the law, and in trouble with women (I mean, mostly with their angry husbands), and as luck would have it, discovered acting. In 1933 he signed with Warner Brothers and that's all she wrote. He was off to the USA, and his handsome charm and talent set women's, and most likely, some mens, hearts - pitter, patter everywhere he went.
His most famous film roles? Don Jaun and Robin Hood. Yowza! He also starred in films with screen legend Bette Davis who supposedly slapped him silly, these two film divas did not get along, but starred in 3 films together [ref.1]. He was controversial, always considered a seducer of women - a rake. He was aquited of statutory rape in 1942, which helped coin the phrase "In Like Flynn". [ref. 2]
2000 Fuller Avenue in Hollywood is the site of one of his homes. It has been torn down, but on some nights, the block lights up and loud laughter and music is heard as if Errol is having a party, like he used to in when he lived there. [ref. 3]
He was a seaman and loved his Yacht, the "Zaca". His ghost was seen on it so frequently that the new owners were terrified. They actually a priest perform an exorcism to get rid of his ghost. [ref. 5]
Peter James, a Paranormal investigator, spent some time in the haunted Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. He had a pleasant time with the ghost of Errol Flynn
"While in the Blossom Ballroom of the hotel, I encountered the spiritual presence of Errol Flynn. I was also able to connect with him in the Tropicana Bar adjacent to the king size swimming pool their on the grounds. Though my encounter was brief on three separate occasions, each time that I experienced his essence, he seemed to be the real party goer. He spoke of the barber shop and happy-hour cocktail times at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. " [ref. 6]
Perhaps the spirit of Errol Flynn is still having such a good time here on Earth, he just isn't ready to leave yet.
