Today is the birthdate of Nathan Hale, born in 1755. He was the son of Elizabeth and Richard Hale, who had 12 children, (Yee Gads!), and a great Hero of the American Revolutionary War. He served as a spy, and at 21 years of age was hung by the English. His famous deeds made him an American Hero, and a statue of him is at the C.I.A. in Washington D.C. [ref.2]
Nathan's father was rich, and he went to Yale and graduated at age 18. He was interested in theatrics and then became a teacher [ref.1], lucky for him, of 20 young ladies. yee hah! All this fun was all interrupted by the start of the Revolutionary War in 1774. He joined up and by 1776 he was promoted to Captain [ref.2]. He agreed to go on an extremely dangerous assignment; he would disguise himself as a school teacher (Dutch) and go to Long Island and learn secret information from the English.
On his return he was caught, found out as a spy, and sentenced to execution by British General Howe. This is the famous quote, never confirmed, by Nathan Hale,
"I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."
Word spread and he became a symbol to the people of the United States and a hero of the Revolutionary War, and it's most famous spy.
His house is known to be haunted, it is located in Coventry, Conneticut. The ghost of his father has been seen peering out of the upstairs window. The sound of Nathan pacing up and down the floors upstairs has been heard as well [ref.3].
Hanz Holzer, a 'famous psychic' made contact with the spirit of Nathan Hale. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of his book, The Spirits of 76, [ref. 4], where he goes into detail about this ghostly contact.
